A three-day National Conference on Insect Diversity and Systematics, organized by Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University


A three-day National Conference on Insect Diversity and Systematics, organized by Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University was inaugurated here yesterday . The theme of the conference focuses on the world of Insects, their diversity and systematics.
Dr. MKJ Siddiqui, Director CST-UP, Lucknow said that the insects which are harmful for the crops should be controlled biologically. He said that the scientists should make serious deliberations on this matter.
Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah said that the world contained an enormous number of living things. No one knows exactly how many different types of organisms inhabit our planet. Insects are the most diverse group of animals and it is not possible to estimate the number of insects in nature. Many of them inhabit the earth today and many others have lived here during past. They inhabit every conceivable area of earth.
The Vice Chancellor also said that insects are extremely valuable to human and society could not exist in its present form without them. They provide us with honey, wax, silk and many other products of commercial value. They also serve as food, act as scavengers and help to keep animals and plants in check.
Dr. Mohd. Kamil Usmani, Organizing Secretary said that every country, particularly developing ones, is in need to develop its economy, improve people's livelihood and provide food security to a rapidly increasing population. He said that the conference will seek to provide solutions towards more sustainable living. Insects are interesting creation of nature and must be studied owing to their impact on our society and environment.
Prof. Irfan Ahmad, Chairman Department of Zoology and Dean Faculty of Life Sciences highlighted the achievements of the Department. Prof. Wasim Ahmad Faridi welcomed the guests. Ms Rifat conducted the programme.


Eminent scientists, speakers, distinguished faculties and researchers across the nation were present on the occasion.
