Dr. C. P. Ramaswamy delivered a lecture on "Tirukkural on financial management" under the special lecture series program of the Department of Modem Indian Languages, Aligarh Muslim University

Former Income Tax Commissioner and expert in financial management, Dr. C. P. Ramaswamy delivered a lecture on "Tirukkural on financial management" under the special lecture series program of the Department of Modem Indian Languages, Aligarh Muslim University.
Tirukkural says that wealth is important in Life and it makes people important. But wealth acquired by proper means will yield happiness in life. The wealth that utilized to benefit others is a waste.
The basic reason for the present day scams and corruption is that we do not follow the financial principle based on Values and fond of accumulating wealth by wrong means. This will not give happiness but will lead you to jail and other miseries, cautioned Dr. Ramaswamy.
Prof T. N. Satheesan, Chairman, Department of Modem Indian Languages presided over the function. He said that Thiruvalluvar, author of the Tirukkural, though born in Tamil Nadu and speaking Tamil, rose above all distinctions of nation, religion, language and creed. He left his legacy of wisdom to the entire world. He wanted to reform the world and teach the citizens of the world, not the people of a particular state or country or language.
Thirukkural is the masterpiece of Tamil literature with the highest and purest expressions of human thought like "Arthashastra" in Sanskrit. We find in "Arthasastra" and Thirukkural, the excellent principles of public finance and financial administration. The failure in economic development in India reflects our inefficient planning, administration and implementation at different levels.
Prof D. Murthy, Professor of Tamil, introduced the topic. This great ethical and philosophical work is a collection of 1330 sacred couplet in 133 chapters. These couplets are grouped into three sections, Aram (virtue), Porul (wealth), Kamam (love). The first and third deals with the individual life, but Porul deals with the public affairs. This is the longest part of Thirukkural containing 70 chapters on wealth. The acquisition and distribution of wealth so as to ensure the happiness of the people, constitute the basis of a good administration.
Dr. Krantipal conducted the proceedings.
