The Disability Unit, Aligarh Muslim University organized an Orientation Programme for Volunteers


The Disability Unit, Aligarh Muslim University organized an Orientation Programme for Volunteers here yesterday.
Dr. Abdul Hamid Fazili, Coordinator, Disability Unit highlighted the objectives of Disability Unit. He said that the Unit was engaged in facilitating admission, guidance and counseling and assistance in employment to otherwise enabled students of AMU. He appreciated financial assistance given by University teachers to needy disabled students, which is in the true spirit of AMU culture. He said that volunteers should reach out to disabled students and guide them.
Prof. Mahmood S. Khan, Department of Psychology emphasized that differently abled students may lack in one area but they are superior in others and need to be guided towards a brighter future. He discussed socio-psychological perspective and the type of approaches towards such students.
Prof. PK Mathur, Department of Sociology shared his personal experiences as a visually challenged person. He urged the student volunteers with the level of his achievements. He mentioned challenges faced by visually challenged and suggested ways to overcome them.
Dr. Mohd. Abid Siddiqui, Placement Officer gave power point presentation on adjustment and strategies for motivating physically challenged. He explained the symptoms of maladjustment, their impacts on a person, and described the strategies to be opted for enhancing motivation.
Amit Yadav of Faculty of Law stressed need for creating awareness among students about duties of volunteers and urged them to come up with confidence.
Rashid Khan, student of Mechanical Engineering suggested organization of co-curricular activities for disabled students to provide them with opportunity to show their talents.
